No. She's been preaching a message that was more progressive and closer to Sanders than it was to Clinton for years before the 2016 election.
She made a cynical political calculation, as she is doing now. She has little support among working class or minority voters. Much less than Biden even. Her only real in road is by trying to appeal to the elite and academic class that she's the safe yet sufficiently progressive choice. These people aren't nearly so enthusiastic about things like single payer, they are putting their finger up to the wind and trying to predict the weather. |

If she's closer in her politics to Clinton than Sanders then you can drop the "populist" part of that title
But they aren't, imo. In rhetoric she's not as hard-line but still closer to Sanders than she is to Clinton. She didn't back him cause she saw him as a losing candidate. The whole "elites came to her first" argument is like a chicken or the egg question. They came to her because she's towing the necessary line for them to feel comfortable doing so. They don't come to you unless you tow that line. The lizard part comes in where she is basically trying to appeal to populist sentiment while simultaneously entrenching herself within the establishment. Nobody is confused as to where Joe Biden's loyalty lies. But the casual observer is very likely to be unclear as what the difference between Bernie Sanders and Warren is. They treat them as if their names are practically synonyms in the mainstream press and during the debates. Like why do you think it's problematic for her to accept big donors in the general election? Isn't that the "pragmatic" thing to do? |

Elizabeth Warren qualifies as one of the "elites" as far as I'm concerned.

This was how Trump was percieved as an "outsider" despite being firmly entrenched in the 1%. He was a political outsider because he didn't have the right allies or the trust of the establishment. Of course once he became the nominee for certain that started to change. |
