Virtually every field is competitive based on merit to some degree

The reason that it's not so simple that people are neatly organized in a heirarchy based on merit is that we all have different hang ups and different starting circumstances.

There are certain career paths you can dive into where arguments about meritocracy do apply. You want to work on cars for a living, but then you flunk out of trade school because you just don't do due diligence, decide to smoke weed instead of showing up to learn, etc. etc. Individual choice does play into outcome in society at some level.

"To some degree" is doing a lot of legwork in that post.

I did understand it. He blatantly ignores the role of the family and other factors and tries to use public education as the sole point of argument. I just don't agree with his overall assessment as someone who jumped around multiple career paths before I got into technology.

The point that I do agree with him on is that public education needs to be re-tooled because a curriculum isn't geared around giving kids the right "starting point" (mentally or otherwise) to look at society and figure out how to embrace their passions effectively. Everything ultimately revolves around useless measuring sticks like the SAT instead of something more practical.
