Yeah, that's the partisan issue. Undocumented isn't really any more correct illegal. Undocumented immigrants are here illegally.

Yeah but to call them illegals suggests that you probably recognize the legitimacy of that law. Again, my bad.

Just being here without authorization (lapsed tourism or work visa, f. ex.) isn't technically illegal, it's just a civil offense. So "illegal immigrant" doesn't apply. Crossing the border without papers is a federal misdemeanor, so would only apply to those people.
