Quite a few things actually...

Quote:
...He didn’t alter his views when he ran for and became president, either. He often said, “Those who, through no fault of their own, must depend on the rest of us” would be exempt from budget cuts. He pushed through three tax increases as president, one of which made Social Security solvent for the past 35 years.

It's helpful to know the author wrote a book about Reagan.

I unfortunately read through that article for more proof about Reagan's hidden liberalism and I really didn't find much of anything. There is a lot of talk of him repeating the same language and phrases FDR used during speeches. This seems to be more demonstrative of his penchant for misleading people than any actual belief he had.

The proof in terms of policy isn't there.

Quote:

Hmm

Quote:
The first tax cut (The Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981) cut the highest tax rate from 70% to 50%.

The second tax cut (The Tax Reform Act of 1986) cut the highest rate from 50% to 38.5% but decreasing to 28% in the following years.
These were the two most impactful changes that were made.

Quote:
the budget deficit increased from $74 billion in 1980 to $221 billion in 1990. The tax cuts are often used to explain the Wealth inequality in the United States as most sites will use data starting in 1980
Sure, maybe Social Security itself was protected (not sure), but to say that the tax cuts are FDR-like? Yea, no, not even close.

The point of the article was showcasing that Reagan never stopped idolizing FDR throughout his life, but took a different approach on key issues to achieve a result he thought would help America thrive and create more opportunity. He agreed with FDR's vision of the country, but as he got older disagreed with the methodology to get there.

Swallowing preacher cum was a novel innovation for a man his age.

I don't see the point of even discussing what his personal views were if he didn't have the backbone to actually implement anything that was remotely related.

I have a hard time believing him when he says this **** during speeches; he obviously would say anything for power and fame.

Not just that, but his policy had a recurring theme of achieving the exact opposite of these ideals he "believed in".

Reagan’s legacy depends on if his nukes are ever used.
