Not this time around but work got hit by ransomware about 6 months back. They decided to pay the ransom because several terabytes of clients images got encrypted and it would have been logistically a pain in the arse and embarrassing to ask all the clients to re-upload their files. I think in the end only about 75% was successfully decrypted.

I was not affected by it, but I get the feeling that a bigger, more effective attack will come along and the US executive will create a department of cyber security. Right now it's a largely ignored part of Homeland Security.

So our officials are just more old people who don't appreciate good anti-virus software.

As evidenced by the demographic of Norton users.

"Hackers behind stolen NSA tool for WannaCry: More leaks coming

Quote:
The WannaCry ransomware never could have escalated as far as it did without the Shadow Brokers. And the hacker group has just resurfaced.

The malware has ensnared up to 300,000 computers in more than 150 countries, locking up devices in hospitals, schools and businesses unless they pay up. It's been able to spread so quickly by sneaking through an infected computer's network, using a server messaging blocking exploit in outdated Windows computers.

The exploit, codenamed EternalBlue, was first discovered by the NSA, but leaked to the world after the Shadow Brokers stole the agency's hacking arsenal. The group, quiet since August, returned Tuesday with a warning for the National Security Agency and the rest of the world: There are going to be more leaked tools.

Nothing makes our nation's enemies sweat quite as much as McAfee. At least when it's on their computers.

We've been getting massive computer updates at my internship for the past 2 days. I'm working at a county planning office, I don't know if there is an actual threat, but they are concerned and taking precaution.
