Almost 400 all-time high temperatures were set in the northern hemisphere over the summer, according to an analysis of temperature records.

^ First the statistics, then the brutal consequences: forest fires in California erupting overnight and spreading like, er, wild fire.

Hurricanes Are Moving More Slowly, Which Means More Damage

^ The unguessed-at side effects of global warming are the most scary imo. I feel that some catastrophic new developments are gonna come - either from methane release or from all the heat that is already locked up in the ocean.

By 2100, Earth’s population is expected to reach 10.9 billion people...“We don’t talk about overpopulation because of real fears from the past—of racism, eugenics, colonialism, forced sterilization, forced family planning, plus the fears from some of contraception, abortion, and sex. We don’t really talk about overconsumption because of ignorance about the economics of overpopulation and the true ecological limits of Earth.”

Yeah. Watching it happen is interesting. I used to imagine massive flooding and vegetation die off. That’s happening but as these things happen like the polar vortex breaking and the heat wave in Europe and the wildfires and endless summer it’s like oh so this is how it’s going to end.

I also think the trapped heat is going to grow exponentially much faster than expected and the impact will be more grotesque than expected.

Bay County Sheriff's Office sees uptick in domestic violence cases since Hurricane Michael
There are still thousands left homeless or forced into very cramped frustrating conditions from this one hurricane from last year. Angry parents are beating the **** out of their miserable kids and men are beating up their wives and girlfriends and in general people are treating each other like ****.

Plus, where there is rebuilding it’s mostly high rent condos and fancy **** where poor and working class people’s homes were demolished. People don’t even **** with insurance because they have ways to stall forever and not payout. Also, in court cases when people try to sue insurance companies poor people on juries typically adopt a blame the victim mentality instead of a sympathetic mindset.

October was hottest on record globally.

Very pessimistic about desalination, btw. Energy, transportation, waste.

Keeping up with the world's extreme weather events is as depressing as it is endless. This article links together three recent ones:-
Australian wildfires, Venice flooding and England flooding.

In the true style of nationalistic journalism, the BBC leads with the news from UK, although the Australian fires are way more serious and the pics of flooded Venice way more poignant:-
One take-away from the article:-
Quote:

[Some scientists] believe that the link between climate change and extreme events is now as strong as the link between smoking cigarettes and lung cancer.

"You can never make a direct connection and say my grandad died of lung cancer because of smoking because you can't figure out how the cancer exactly originated; there might be other factors," said Prof Gabi Hegerl.

"But you can say for sure that if you smoke the probability of coming down with lung cancer is hugely increased. The same methods have been applied to the climate problem."

Repent!

A former rugby player has a solution to the problem of global warming:-

Quote:

Rugby player Israel Folau has drawn anger for linking Australia's bushfire crisis to the nation's same-sex marriage and abortion laws.

Folau, who was sacked by Australia in May for making anti-gay remarks on social media, described the fires as a "little taste of God's judgement".

Folau, who is Christian, gave a sermon in his Sydney church on Sunday in which he said Australia's decision to pass abortion and same-sex marriage laws had gone against "God's word", adding the nation needed to "repent".

"Look how rapid these bushfires, these droughts, all these things have come, in a short period of time. You think it's a coincidence or not?," he said.

Is this the result of repeated concussion on the rugby pitch, or should we expect more of this kind of talk as extreme weather events continue to escalate? Sadly for the human race, I suspect it will be the latter. :(

Come back soon, OH, and add strength to my despair. ;)

Carbon emmisions worldwide were up 1% in 2019.

Up.

Claiming carbon emmisions are slowing is like saying you’re driving slower because you only increased your speed from 100 to 101.

Since 2015 it’s been steady at 1% but that’s 1% of a bigger pie each year

Before 2015 it was steady at 3% but that was 3% of a smaller pie

There’s talk of coal reduction and coal produces 40% more carbon per unit of energy than gas but...

every bit of coal that can be dug from the earth is going to get burnt

I know people aren’t hearing that but it’s true. Coal has such an incredible amount of stored energy in it - it might as well be crack rock lying around in a ghetto - it’s getting ****ing smoked
