The teachings of the religion aren't good to people that don't have any faith in them.

This is crazy true and it's surprising how many people don't recognize it. I mean, the bible is like three times longer than the quran.

I'd wager that (for the most part) a low IQ would be a major factor when it came to joining a religion in the first place

I don't think so. Plenty of hugely intelligent people are religious in one way or another. The level of religiosity and likelihood of becoming an extremist probably heightens as the IQ drops though.

I would believe that at face value without seeing studies. Obviously, it would be nice to see some kind of source to back it up.
One of the huge worries in England at the moment is radicalization within prisons as you get (generally) impressionable low IQ dickheads becoming fanatics.
