We don’t know if mimicking a biological brain is the only way to create general AI but that’s where he rests his argument. It’s true that for the purpose of winning an argument about it the onus is on some proposing AI as an existential threat. Unfortunately in this case winning an argument doesn’t make you right. The real onus that he appears to want to absolved from is to not **** up the world with some kind of psychopathic machine. Like autonomous drones with machine guns and facial recognition. He can scoff at people who can’t code all he wants. I know enough history to understand how nasty science can be.

What he doesn't address is that AI doesn't have to be at a human brain level of complexity, of course, to actually erase a big chunk of entry level desk jobs, cell center positions and trucking jobs. That being said, it is no picnic to build something that can handle any real complexity. I'm in the throes of it right now.
