TSRI Scientists Create First Stable Semisynthetic Organism

Stuff like this scares me a little, but it's still exciting.

Neat! It would be interesting to see what would happen after a couple hundred generations with a stable base pair!

Great thread. Science-wise, I'm particularly interested in CRISPR and how it will continue to evolve as different human trials launch and start producing results.

CRISPR

I know.. I'm still looking for follow up info to see if anything came from it.

Xurtio 02-13-2017 07:31 AM

Crispr has already done a lot of neat stuff in the lab for research.

I thought it was some kind of research about deaf people and baldness from the headline.

Pretty good introduction to quantum fields. I suppose people interested in the matter will already know most of ths, but it's an interesting and easy to follow overview.

Seeing those kids being interested in that stuff really gives one hope for humanity. A bit.

Coooool. That pretty much suggests (I don't suppose it's concrete enough to be truly compelling evidence of anything solid concerning consciousness) what so many think, that consciousness is an emergent phenomenon that's countless processes merging together to create an illusion of personhood so strong that the person can't even tell.

DwnWthVwls 03-05-2017 07:43 PM

Cool channel. I just watched like 4 of their vids.

Michio Kaku is fun and entertaining, and he talks about science, but what he does as far as public platform is concerned is often more speculation than actual science. Sometimes, totally preposterous sensational speculation.

Such as?

OccultHawk 03-07-2017 10:19 AM

He pulls **** out of his ass like the multiverse theory

He's fun but there's so little evidence for some of those theories it might as well be Scientology.

Frownland 03-07-2017 10:27 AM

I assumed his confidence in the multiverse theory was a product of being visited by an interdimensional traveler.

Pet_Sounds 03-07-2017 09:28 PM

Am I the only one who rolls my eyes whenever the multiverse is referred to as a "theory"? Theories, by definition, must have experimental support. Even calling it a hypothesis is generous. It's about as experimentally verifiable as God.

You're right.

Just apply that to a single, infinite universe and you'll be more on track.

Xurtio 03-07-2017 11:47 PM

I couldn't give any examples any more. I've dumped my mind of that garbage. But I fondly remember rolling my eyes and sighing at a lot of things he said over the course of my physics education.
