Admittedly, I haven't read up on Hiroshima/Nagasaki much, but I thought this was worth inserting into the discussion.

I still believe FDR deserves his place in history regardless. He was a great leader, even incapacitated as he was.

Exactly - Japan was obsessed with saving as much face as possible. They even found a silver lining with the bombs, thinking at least now people will see they HAD to surrender and the surrender didn't happen because of some social or political push.

They don't have to fly into the caves that's why they used a more powerful bomb so they can drop it from overhead and it will still destroy all the tunnels within the cave. Use your noggin sir.

This seems to be an ominous development to me, for two reasons:-

i) throwing heavy artillary and big bombs at troops is often strategically ineffective. It didn't help much in the First World War, and it didn't help much in Vietnam.
ii) at a time when most of the world is worried about N.Korea's escalating military showmanship, the US is setting a pretty bad example.

Depending on how many innocent Afgans have been killed, it could also turn into another home goal in the game of international PR, if you know what I mean; that the Afgans will not see the US as protecting them from extremists, but as aggressors instead.
