The substantive point I was making is not all income is taxed similarly. To put it in stark terms, if Joe works at Costco making $50k a year and Bill makes $50k a year thru passive income off investments, Bill will pay (substantively) less in taxes. To put it in realistic terms, if you have a better job you get retirement benefits that not only pay out more but are often structured in such a way they are either tax neutral or act in as a deduction.... meaning you pay less in taxes for more better pay.
