I see a lot of people pointing out the double standards but that's about it. Last line pretty much says it all. |

Agreed. I think that the right gets triggered and whiny way more than the left does.

Both sides are pretty awful. I think the awfulness makes up the minority of both sides though (racists and alt-right for the right, and PC fembots for the left.)

Best thing I ever heard (funniest, most stupid) was a guy in the UK who, according to my workmate who was there, was accused of "revving his car in a racist manner"!!! How on God's green Earth do you do that???

I did a little bit of research and it sounds like a bs way of them trying to get his noisy ass car off the street.

As a white male, I will never ever ever be the equal of a Japanese man. Never. No matter how hard I work, no matter what I do, I will always be discriminated against. Real discrimination, too, like being refused a place to rent. Shit's legal here. |

This is an article by my favourite psychologist and researcher, Jonathan Haidt, on the topic of safe spaces and trigger warnings, and I think it's a respectful take on the PC phenomenon.
How Trigger Warnings Are Hurting Mental Health on Campus - The Atlantic In short, trigger warnings and safe spaces have been psychologically disproven. They make people feel comfortable, and they shelter them from discomfort, but they are fundamentally flawed because they enable phobias rather than helping people overcome them. Systematic desensitization (exposure therapy) is the gold star treatment for phobias, anxiety disorders, and has proven useful in the treatment of OCD and PTSD. It involves gradual exposure to a feared stimulus (a trigger, if you will) in a safe environment. Haidt points out that the college environment IS that safe place to be exposed to fears, and by censoring the language used there, we are actually worsening the strength of individuals' aversion to words and ideas that they are GOING to have to face outside those walls. The world outside the lecture theatre is much less patient, less tolerant, less knowledgeable, and less understanding, and by continuing to swaddle the ears of our developing adults, we are not preparing them as best we can to function at their optimal capacity as adults. Nevermind the society on the outside of their personal battles. |
