  • In the late 17th century, Qing official Yu Yonghe recorded that injured Dutch soldiers fighting against Koxinga's forces for control of Taiwan in 1661 would use gunpowder to blow up both themselves and their opponents rather than be taken prisoner.
  • The first known suicide bomber was Russian. The invention of dynamite in the 1860s presented revolutionary and terrorist groups in Europe with a weapon nearly twenty times more powerful than gunpowder, but with technical challenges to detonating it at the right time. One way around that obstacle was to use a human trigger, and this was the technique that assassinated Tsar Alexander II of Russia in 1881. A would-be suicide-bomber killed Vyacheslav von Plehve, the Russian Minister of the Interior, in St Petersburg in 1904.
  • During the Xinhai Revolution (the Revolution of 1911) and the Warlord Era of the Republic of China (1912–1949), "Dare to Die Corps" were frequently used by Chinese armies. China deployed these suicide units against the Japanese during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
  • Kamikaze, a ritual act of self-sacrifice carried out by Japanese pilots of explosive-laden aircraft against Allied warships, occurred on a large scale at the end of World War II. About 3000 attacks were made and about 50 ships were sunk, but the Japanese still lost the war.
  • In Germany, during the Battle for Berlin the Luftwaffe flew "Self-sacrifice missions" (Selbstopfereinsatz) against Soviet bridges over the River Oder.
  • North Korean tanks were attacked by South Koreans with suicide tactics during the Korean War.
  • An Arab Christian military officer from Syria, Jules Jammal, allegedly brought down a French ship with a suicide attack during the Suez Crisis in 1956.

these are all from wikipedia... but you get my point. besides, it has been proven time after time that suicide attacks are POLITICAL... not religious. and it just so happens that most wars and political problems or whatever are happening in muslim majority countries right now.

honestly growing up muslim... we were ALWAYS taught that suicide was ALWAYS wrong. ALWAYS. and that no matter what... if you kill yourself you will go to hell. so the whole idea of islamic suicide bombings make 0 sense to me.

Ok. I knew this. But I thought you meant in the last thirty years. See I was taught that Muslims believe that if you die for your faith you will be awarded with 72 virgins in the next life. Which always gave off the impression that they are dying for there faith. But I wasn't raised Muslim.

not true. we were told a story about a man who fought with prophet muhammed... he fought alongside him in one of the wars he was in and was injured very badly. he was in so much pain he just stabbed himself in the heart? to end it all. we were told he would go to hell. because you NEVER EVER kill yourself... EVER. your body and soul are a gift from god which you should NEVER take for granted.

also the number 72 never even appears in the quran so... i don't know where that even came from. i've never heard of it my entire life except from westerners on the internet.

and again i should repeat that in the last 30 years or so most wars and violence have been happening in islamic countries so... i'm guessing thats why all the suicide bombings are happening there. again... POLITICAL reasons.

its like the 'if the mountain won't come to Muhammad' story. this doesn't exist in islam. westerners invented it. and it got repeated so much people took it for a fact... when its 100% false and doesn't even exist in islam.

i'm NOT saying islam isn't ****.. i'm not a muslim anymore for a reason. but that doesn't change the fact that there are so many misconceptions about the middle east and terrorism and religion and all that.

I'm really glad you are a member of this board. It's refreshing to hear from someone who has real perspective on the issues.
