It's not a misread it's absolutely bang on.

The attackers feel justified in doing stuff like this because they believe that they are good people and the person being attacked is bad and therefore deserves it. Why else would you attack an 80+ year old man for voting a certain way? And you think he is far right for wanting the UK to leave the EU?
