I'm certainly no expert on the subject, but if the UK votes to leave, it strikes me as something that would go down in the history books as the turning point in a move toward the country losing global significance.

Yeah, when the empires they'd built were in shambles and their homelands had been bombed into the stone age, leaving a gaping hole in the world's power structure that was filled by America, Russia, and now China.

We also had a ginormous landmass to expand on, with all the unlimited possibilities that might bring. England is on an island that's been thoroughly settled for hundreds or thousands of years, has no prospects for any kind of expansion, and has already been in decline for at least a century.
