My intent was to buy drugs, but you get to know people and meaningful conversations arise. If your argument is that my initial intention negates the impact of the conversation all I can say is I don't think it does.

My opinion, based solely on anecdotal evidence, is that crime/gang violence is so embedded in those inner city communities that changing the people or freeing them from "oppression" is not something they want. Gang life is legitimately glorified...

You would need a MIRACLE to change their minds as a whole, or enforce the most ridiculous of laws (even if intentions were pure and trying to make it a "better place"). You can't force people to change according some standard created by outsiders. If a community has a problem with its' social-ethics than it will change on its' own.. Look at black, women, and gay rights throughout American history.

This is not to say we shouldn't try to help those who want it, but I doubt anything will change until there are more of the people who want/need help than there are gangbangers and drug dealers corrupting the youth before they have a chance.
The community work that I do doesn't really involve trying to change minds but to work with tangible **** that they have to deal with on an everyday basis. Finding a job and affordable housing, having at the very least an okay place to stay. Rox, already covered the whole you shouldn't make assumptions without asking or at least ask and wait for us to tell you. The area that I'm in has some very rough areas. There is a small group of people causing the most violence and by standers are getting hurt. I missed going to a meeting on Mother's day about having the community come together to come up with solutions for dealing with the current level of violence that has been going on lately. I know about mental issues/anguish that goes on in poor communities. The real issue is that black people tend to either be apathetic to their current situation and feel disenfranchised. They also don't deal with the many mental issues that crop up as a part of being stressed out from poverty in general. They don't get treated/look for help and make fun of or look down upon those that do have conditions. Most people love to talk about the problems they are facing but they aren't desperate enough to fight to change their situation.

The whole gangbangers and drug dealers corrupting the youth statement is kind of naive. Why do you think kids think those are viable options? I'll just tell you. It all boils down to not having enough money. They can't find jobs to support their families and pay for basic necessities. It can also be linked to them not having any options of anything else to do during their free time. I'm sure you've heard about the school to prison pipeline.

And freeing yourself from your opression starts with the self realization that you are oppressed first.

Edit: Its not as hard as you think to start unlocking minds...All you have to do is smile, and really listen to people and their thoughts and opinions in earnest and start a dialogue.
Roxy, the best way to communicate your ideas to a group is just to have a regular conversation with them which I'm sure you are finding out. You talk to the person and find out what their self interest is. Once you find that then you can use that to your advantage to deliver your message or challenge them to see if they are angry enough to fix/change their current situation. Or just even be open to new ideas.

And my bad, the way you typed it made it read as I explained.
The city that I'm in a couple of years was in the top 10 list of highest murders per capita. It's funny because the other night, someone pulled up alongside of me and asked if I was cop and then said "Do I know where she can speak off the record?" I knew what she was attempting to ask but I know jack **** about any spots so I was pretty useless to her. She's just like I'll go to a different city that is about 30 mins away.

Yeah, we agree on that. I was just kind of stating how I do it in my own words even though we are pretty much saying the same thing.

You no like? Flatbush Zombies new album cover art work from David Nakayama. He has done plenty of cover work for X-Men comics and Big Hero 6.

I personally never really felt like it was my strongest characteristic but I do push myself so that I can get better at it.

Most likely, when I meet people that I have met from online in person. It usually flows naturally because we have so much history to talk about and the connection is still there. We already know certain things about each other.
