There's also a Cowboy Bebop episode about a cypher prophet that was digitally created by a terminally ill patient who transferred his conscious into the web.

Awesome, thanks Black Francis! I definitely need to revisit The Animatrix, and I'll never turn down some Cowboy Bebop!

A Convincing Rembrandt Painting Crafted With 3-D Printing : All Tech Considered : NPR

Quote:
"A computer learned, with artificial intelligence, how to re-create a new Rembrandt right eye," Korsten explains. "And we did that for all facial features, and after that, we assembled those facial features using the geometrical dimensions that Rembrandt used to use in his own work."

The statistical data even determined the type of painting — a portrait, which was the most significant portion of the artist's work, and were most common between 1632 and 1642.
This sort of reminds me of synthetic marijuana. Fake weed scared the hell out of me but it was weedlike, just nuttier and way more paranoidier. Synthetic drugs are scary but synthetic art isn't. I would like to see what this kind of algorithm could do to create synthetic Coltrane.

Something about that painting seem unnatural. It's not scary - it's strange. It doesn't fall directly into the uncanny valley, but it's on the cusp, imo. The face looks like more like it is collage of faces or maybe a portrait by a unskilled apprentice, not by an artist with the same skill as Rembrandt. The album covers are examples of what I mean. I'm not saying the AI painting is that bad, those album covers are a bit of an exaggeration. But as subtle as it is, those mistakes went unnoticed by the AI, and they're noticeable to me.

But those album covers aren't the synthetic Rembrandt. It doesn't look like a collage to me. I admit I don't know much about art, however.

Either that or you're just pretending to see what isn't there so you can sound arty. Or maybe you've just convinced yourself you're seeing something just cause you know how the painting was made.

Looks like a typical portrait with nice lighting so New Rembrandt is fitting.

Thanks for sharing Captain Obvious. I know those albums are not an AI rendition of a Rembrandt painting.

No. I am not trying to sound arty. The painting does seems odd to me for some reason. Put it this way, you might see it as a 100% Rembrandt, I see it barely passing at 70%.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well, you said the synthetic Rembrandt looks like a collage and then post other art to make your point... but ok. Do you have any other art that's not this art to help the discussion along?

Trollheart hasn't frequent MB lately, so I'm glad you're filling his shoe with the dad jokes.

Well, the only reason I mention "collage" was because (imo) the facial feature looked disproportional in the AI rendering of a Rembrandt painting, and I thought a good way of explaining what I meant about the disproportionality of the facial features.
