William, that was a great post (your last one; don't want to quote it all): I learned more about the situation in the Middle East and Assad's position in it than I ever did watching the news. Very well explained and without a hint of superiority or condescension.

Have you considered starting a political journal? I know I would certainly read it.

Do you know what's so ****ing crazy about this knife attack? Did you see how many people stood around ****ing videoing it on their phones so they could upload it?? Who does that? You either wade in and help (unlikely) or get the hell out of there. I don't think, if I were being menaced by someone with a knife in a tube station, that I would want a lot of gob****es committing the event to YouTube!
It's the way things are sadly. When something like this happens it's a shame the first thing on the minds of many is "this will get a lot of retweets on Twitter' or 'this will get lots of views on Youtube'. Doing something to try and help the person in trouble seems to be the last thing on their minds. It would appear that social media has become more important than real life for some, and apparently even more important than other people's lives.

I remember when the Smiler crashed and the riders were trapped on it, I think the girl who lost a leg was shouting at people to stop taking pics.

You know, I could almost understand it if they were doing it so as to have a record for the cops or court or whatever. In the days before mobile phones that kind of on-the-spot evidence gathering would not have been possible. But sadly, I doubt anyone was thinking of that, and as you say, it was all about how many views they could get on YT or retweets or whatever the ****. Wonder if they stopped to think how they'd feel if they were the one getting attacked and everyone around them was just taking pictures?

Reminds me of a fantastic episode of "Black Mirror". Let me know if you want me to tell you about it, but the twist ending would spoil it for you if I told you. You've probably seen it anyway.

Thanks for the compliment. I just put it out there.

Unfortunately my career keeps me to busy to have a political journal (Ie; I wouldn't have time to defend my viewpoints if I got in a debate)

However, I have been thinking about doing a journal that has prominent writers and intellectuals from both the left and right (living and dead), so I'll see how my workload go in the next few weeks.
