The difference is that smart people are capable of acknowledging that politics is overriding their rational thought processes and considering they may be wrong.
Of course, they still get caught up in passion in the heat of discussion/debate sometimes, but appeals to reason a tally work on them sometimes. Whereas stupid people will ride their high horses to the death.

Yeah, smart people are just as capable of being dumbasses when it comes to emotional topics. And since they have even more brain power to use on a subject, they can get even further lost down the rabbit hole of irrational stupidity.

I dont condone of trolling for the record. An infiltration noob might get one or two good troll posts in before their IP got permabanned on physics forums. Most trolls on the reddit subforum just get downvoted to oblivion or ignored.
There's a spectrum, too. Some mild forms of trolling can lead to productive conversation and are tolerated (or can't really be proven to be trolling). Some people just use trolling as an excuse for not being able to control their impulsive and/or compulsive online behavior, and they can be toxic.

ftr i've never claimed to be a troll
part of the shtick i've developed on here is just being unapologetically crass and abrasive. i developed this persona in part in response to the overwhelming atmosphere of hypersensitivity that existed on this forum when i first joined. other people label me a troll, for whatever reasons they might have. i never promoted myself as such. most of the real ****storms i've generated on this site were actually relatively random and unintentional for my part and it's my understanding that trolls actually try to create ****storms. the biggest one i ever created was when i used ***got to describe the types of pretentious film school nerds that like eraserhead. which was not some genius troll plot... it was just collective arbitrarily deciding that 'this time jwb has crossed the line' and rallying behind that collective outrage. |

A prick? Sure. Troll? Never. I'm pretty sure you feel likewise.
