Democrstic socialism doesn't suffer that fate as it is still subject to a democratic (and capitalist) framework in which a variety of ideological values still have competitive value in the political market.

Every political-economic system, including the US, has some degree of socialism. It's not an all-or-nothing thing. What they are not, at least since 1991 or arguably even since 1986, are Totalitarian governments. What Bernie wants to do is 8 Bajillion miles from totalitarian communism. What Bernie wants is a hybrid, using social programs where the profit motive tends to corrupt, like health care ferinstance.
