Um, just a dumb question: how long do your polling stations stay open? Because although nobody cares about an Irish election, we don't get the day off either, but they're open from 7 am to 10 pm. Ain't nobody works those kind of hours. So you either vote on your way into work or when you finish. Why does this not apply in the Land of Opportunity?

I was just looking at your "people can't get off work to vote" assertion, and wondering how that worked. When I did work, and there was an election, workmates would always say "did you vote/are you voting/don't forget to vote", so it was always seen as important, and I'm sure if someone genuinely needed an hour or so off to go vote then they would have been allowed to do so.

Right. But that, as you say yourself, is probably an isolated attitude. Maybe. I would assume that most employers would go out of their way to ensure their employees had the opportunity to vote, if for no other reason so as not to be accused of suppressing their voting rights. Unless they had some ulterior motive I guess. Even then, I imagine it would be hard to implement such a policy and maybe even lead to a rash of "sick days" every four years?

The only issue I see there is this: if you make it a national holiday, certain people still have to work (polling staff, counters, police etc) so do you pay them extra to induce them to work, or do you say "it's a holiday, but not for you."?

There aren't any federal requirements for being paid extra on a national holiday, no. The kind of jobs that would still be running would be people who kind of expect the possibility of not getting holidays off though.
