No, they're called the Armed Response Units, and while not every ordinary copper carries a gun, these guys are the special ops or SAS of the police force. Even here in Ireland, violent crime has become too rampant for our guys to approach them with nothing more than a calming cup of tea anymore...

I'm honestly just guessing here but I would assume that they respond to specific calls such as a SWAT team would. It doesn't make sense (in my brain anyways) to have officers armed with automatic weapons just hanging out walking around.

Anywhere besides the US, and Europe, cops don't need guns to be dicks. They can take you to their ****ty third world jails. That's dick move enough. Also my experience is that about $150.00 USD gets me out of my brand of third world trouble.

Not saying Us cops aren't bribeable but your money has to be long enough to corrupt.

Pretty much as Fiddler says. They're called out for specific crimes, like a bank robbery or whatever. But I think (monkey can confirm for the UK) they can also be part of like a bodyguard for a dignitary, part of a riot squad and the TDs (equivalent of members of parliament here) have armed guards driving them around.

So in other words, they're almost completely outside the realm of this conversation.

Your contention was UK police don't even have guns. This proves they do, not always, but they are sometimes armed, so no, it's not necessarily relevant to the actual topic, but it's correcting you on an erroneous assumption.
