I have to nitpick at this language, I apologize. I agree with the jist of your opening post but "existing to reproduce" implies purpose and places undue necessity on reproduction for individuals.

Actually, the French have one of the best military records of any nation: http://www.militaryfactory.com/battl..._victories.asp And don't forget that in their first encounter France kicked the shit out of Prussia. It took all of the major European powers forming an alliance to finally bring him down.

lol, alright. i disagree tbh. i think about it like this... say we created a race of artificially intelligent androids for the purpose of having realistic android butlers cause we thought that'd be suave or whatever. we learned from and mimicked the design that evolution presented naturally when creating the artificial intelligence necessary to deploy said androids. these androids, as a result, might come to have some genuinely human interests and ambitions, being modeled after humans and all. but that doesn't change the fact that the purpose for which they were designed was to serve as android butlers.... even if in their android mind being an android butler isn't their most valued priority.

But humans weren't designed, they emerged as a consequence of natural laws. Humans have no objective meaning or purpose and the often determine their own purpose subjectively, or allow others to determine it for them.

To expand on my first post itt, which was terse, there are members of species (especially in a supersocial species like humans) whose contribution is not to reproduce, but who contribute to the health of the population in varying ways. Now, you can't really talk in too much detail about evolved traits in this context because there's not much molecular evidence (the evolution of the kidney is easily traced compared to the evolution of behavior; this is a huge flaw of evolutionary psychology).

BUT, some ideas are the "gay uncle theory" and "kinship selection" (as a mechanism for "biological altruism"). Unfortunately, a lot of the research is cotroversial and political, so I try to avoid it. I don't need physical evidence of evolutionary relevance to treat people with different sexual orientation as equals, anyway.
