I'd think they could do with a few field trips to the planetarium.
This is exactly right.

I had a thought about this so I thought I'd bring it back up. I don't think there are male gender roles. I think women are just discouraged from doing things and that society has a tendency to attach gender to attributes and actions. I think I've expressed here before how absurd I think that is. A person can't seem to be competitive and strong without being thought of as masculine or demure and supportive without being thought of as feminine. That's ridiculous and doesn't make sense. In the world of humans beings living in developed countries a person's attributes and actions are just that. Tying back being employed to pay bills and buy food to being a primitive hunter is ****ing stupid.

how is it any different from making the connection between how domestic cats play and how wild cats hunt?

Ideally, there's nothing to be gained from a person's sex characteristics in employment. Outside of say modeling or prostitution. Both sexes are equally capable and to say it's more the responsibility of one than the other is sexist.

In fact, I doubt being male really had any substantial benefit in being a hunter too.

i agree obviously that we don't have the same lifestyle as our ancestors... but the thing is when people speak about gender roles as if they are something that "society" manufactured, that's simply false imo.

it is readily apparent that humans are a species which is sexually dimorphic... i.e. different traits and characteristics have been selected for in males by females and vice versa.

so the masculinity and femininity you speak of are basically a reflection of our biology and more specifically the survival strategy that we adopted for most of our existence.

you are right to say that we need not follow the roles that evolution has ordained for us, as thinking beings we have that right. but in terms of explaining where these traits come from, or in other words... why is manly **** considered manly? there the answer is spelled out for you in our past.

i would say the male had to be the hunter because the female had to be the mother. that's why males were selected for traits which are more conducive to physical strength etc.

If I had to go hunt a mammoth with a spear, I'd much rather have John Cena on my team than Scarlett Johansson.

I'm positive that if Scarlet Johanson grew up doing whatever it was that John Ceva did/does that makes you feel more comfortable with him than her, she'd be just as capable.

That seems like a valid explanation. And I'm glad we agree that it's time to move past the mentality it's created.
