Dude, I don't want to have sex with you. I'm not drunk enough.

Kinda late to this thing, but I generally think gender specific expectations to how people should be are a bad thing.

As an example, let's say you have a family of three with a sick kid. Either mom stays at home with the sick kid or dad does it. Whoever it should be might be a practical issue (ex. who can get time off from work?), but it shouldn't be a moral gender issue.

In short, I generally agree with Oriphiel. We should expect others to be decent people with good values at the core, regardless of gender. Like, say, you don't hit your partner. Or you provide for your family.

Gender specific expectations are fair when they are based on actual differences between the sexes. For example, I wouldn't expect men to breastfeed their children, but I might expect a lactating mother to do so. Men bottlefeed instead.

edit :

Stuff like this irritates me. There's a store in the town where I live which does this to a great extent :

There's the pink section for girls and then the section for boys is blue and has cars, dinosaurs and sciency stuff in it. I just think it's awful and manipulative. Girls shouldn't feel like they're supposed to play with dolls and boys shouldn't feel like they're supposed to play with cars.

Girls need to be encouraged to like Math and Science. I never got that but didn't give two ****s about gender roles growing up. I was a tom boy until about 15. Now I dress girly and have dolls but also pursue Computer Science and am a sci fi fangirl. There really should be no expectations of what a gender should like/do.

Why?

What if they don't want to.

I would say everyone should be encouraged to like math and science, boys and girls equally. And those who don't like it can find something else to be good at.

Children shouldn't be encouraged to like anything or have pressure from society about what they should like. Let them decide what they like or want to try, and if they are still nervous or skeptical then you encourage/motivate them.

I don't think they should be encouraged to like anything specifically, but in general they should be encouraged toward everything. Some people are going to be naturally driven toward one field, but look at the vast rows of vegetable people who have no interest in any educational field. I'd think they could do with a few field trips to the planetarium.

It annoys me how we apply this to our pets too. Despite having two girl dogs, almost everyone assumes one of them is a boy because her leash is blue whereas the other one has a pink one (ironically the one with a blue leash is named Pink). I've tried very hard to find gender neutral things for them, or to avoid the typical "girly" looking dog stuff.
