  • Active death help and suicide shouldn't be compared. Suicide is, in most cases, the result of untreated mental problems, as stated above. Active death help is something offered in order to shorten the time in which a victim of painful and inevitably lethal disease suffers.
That being said, this is a thing I haven't decided a viewpoint on yet. It's a tough issue for sure, and I want to know more about the issue before I decide what I think about it.

In Norway in general, it's a mixed bag. Only one of our major parties support active death help, Fremskrittspartiet, or the Progress Party (though they're not progressive at all imo). They have a certain amount of influence, since they're one of the two parties that make up our current executive branch, and they have 29 of our 169 parliamentary seats.

With mental illness though sweetie, people sometimes don't take their meds, because they feel like zombies, and when they do feel right they are off them and acting a damn fool, so if they feel like they don't want to live in a cracked state of mind why deny them the right to end it. If that is the way they truly feel about it. But like I said have two sane people sign off on it.

I knew you'd all jump on that first paragraph, but I felt it would have been disingenuous of me to have left it out and then go on to describe the situation here.

I don't mean to denigrate anyone but it's relatively easy to end your life if you want to. Living is the hard part. I think anyone who contemplates suicide should genuinely speak to people about it, and think about what they're doing and what happens when they're gone. It angers me that people do this and then their loved ones are left with feelings of guilt -- was it me? Could I have saved them if etc? --- which to me seems selfish. To condemn your loved ones to a life of wondering, guilt and loss is certainly what I would describe the coward's way out. I'm sorry if nobody agrees but that's how I feel and I would be hypocritical were I to say otherwise.

I know things get on top of people and many feel they can't go on, and being I guess a fairly privileged white guy (or girl, if you listen to CN! ;)) I probably don't have a clue what it's all about really. But put that to one side: if they're my views they're my views. It sickens me, for instance, that LiL hates and reviles and curses the idea of children and people having children every time she has a chance, but I don't remark upon that because they are her views. I've known people who have had loved ones commit suicide and while it sorted out the problem for the person involved, whatever your beliefs are, all they left behind was hurt, bitterness, guilt and a void. I don't think that's right. But let that go; most of you don't agree but don't try to sway me because I have very strong feelings about it.

As to Monkey's "not this again", well I already signposted why mate: It's not coming out of the blue. It's an issue now, today, in Ireland and I wanted to know if anyone else goes through this in their country. So far, with the exception of Isbjorn nobody has bothered to answer that question, more concerned with jumping on me for the first paragraph. So, does anyone else experience this in their country? Roxy says it should be allowed, legal, and I obviously agree. What do the rest of you think? Please look beyond the first paragraph and give me your considered opinion. Or don't. But stop focussing on my views vis a vis suicide; they're mine and they're not going to change.

I should also say, anyone who has experienced a suicide I apologise for my insensitive remarks, but I'm nothing if not honest.

Just stop it. You haven't a f*cking clue and quite frankly you're really pissing me off.

Nobody asked you. I told you I don't want to explore the subject of suicide, but assisted suicide being legal. If you insist on focussing on one aspect of that, then I don't really care if it pisses you off frankly. I told you I don't want to discuss it; those views are mine and I don't care to engage in debate about them. If anyone wishes to actually address the question I posed, with a woman's freedom literally in the balance today, then please do so. Otherwise probably best to avoid posting here as you're just going to get angry, and make me angry too.

Then maybe you should stop making cavalier, dickish comments on the subject.

I pretty much agree with what Roxy stated BTW.

Easy killer^.

TH, is probably one of the most selfless members as he takes care of his sister who is quite ill. I am pretty sure, his opinions come from somewhere rooted in something. Take it easy.

( @ TH sorry lovie if that was private. I could have sworn you mentioned that here before.)

Edit: You gotta know who you are talking at brah. I have said this too you before man, you don't really know what another member is going through, and they are real live ppl attached to these posts man. Just handle people with care man that's all I ask.

Chula Vista 04-23-2015 03:07 PM

I'm fully aware of what TH is going through with his sister. It's been mentioned here and discussed a number of times since I joined.

Maybe he's the one that needs to wonder about who he's talking too when discussing a subject as sensitive as suicide in such a cold and heartless manner.

Using words like COWARD and EASY in regard to suicide is simply not cool at all.

Dude. Two wrongs?

I'm for assisted suicide because taking it on yourself doesn't always work out that way and could leave you a vegetable. There's also a lot less clean up. Gotta think about those you leave behind ya know.
