I think that the mindset that voting is the only thing you can do to spark change is really toxic and ignorant, as if you are actually doing anything by voting. Voting is slacktivism at it's best. If anything, people who do vote shouldn't bitch, because they are the ones perpetuating the system of government and allowing it to perpetuate. There are so many other methods of inciting change / revolution, whether it be protest, or creating alternative power structures that do not operate within the confines of Democracy, etc.

I wonder how people would react to someone setting off a bomb in Congress during a full session of the House of Representatives? Of course, "Boo terrorism! USA! USA! USA!" But does anyone actually care enough to feel bad over the loss of those people? In public there'd be outcry and all that ****, but I wonder just how much there would be behind closed doors.

It's about ****ing time. I've been trying to get on that list for ages, but they're so stuck up.

Apologies if this was mentioned in the previous thread, but here in the UK Russell Brand (ex Mr Katy Perry) has a similar viewpoint and Jeremy Paxman entirely failed (IMO) to ridicule him for it:-

Personally I fully agree with Brand; don't vote but make it known as loudly as possible why not.

John Wilkes Booth 04-14-2015 04:15 AM

his viewpoint is similar in that he doesn't think voting is all that useful. i agree with him on that point. though really i would say it should be taken on a case by case basis. i wouldn't tie myself down and resolve to never vote no matter what. if it seems like you might be able to tip the scales on a particular issue you care about then it might make sense for you to vote. but i think for the vast majority of us we're just not in that situation.

the rest of his **** with the vague revolution or whatever i'm not really on board with.

I don't really want to re-ignite the whole vote/don't vote debate which has been explored elsewhere already, but I will be interested to look at JWB's ant colony videos. To me it's often quite instructive to compare human behaviour to animal behaviour. How we are the same and how we are different both help to put our own species into perspective.

Democracy is an interesting idea, we should try it out some time.

It amuses me how the term democracy is has become synonymous with good governance. That way, instead of acknowledging the shortcomings of democracy they simply become undemocratic.
