Just because it isn't happening to me personally does not mean I can't get damn angry about it.

That post was obviously not directed at you and was directed at the immature posters commenting on the topic.

That's kind of the point. Police brutality is a bi-product of systematic racial oppression that has been happening since this country was founded. Does eliminating racial profiling and minority deaths by cop do anything to solve the real problem? If I was a justice warrior I would be attacking the issue at it's core rather than police brutality (which in reality is a blip of a problem in the grand scheme of things). I feel like people focus on this issue because it is easier to solve and easier to blame other's for. At the end of the day racial discrimination will never change until the ghettos are dissolved or white people are the ghetto majority.

Anyone who disagrees with you is ignorant and immature. Old news.

This discussion is really no different from arguing with you about music. Have you ever thought about why you are the minority on almost every point you decide to stand behind, even though you're not the only racial minority on the forum?

I agree with this for the most part. I guess I thought you were agreeing with everybody else that this "isn't about race" for some reason.

i was speaking in general, not about this certain case or whatever. just my personal experience. i know white people who say they've had problems with the cops and **** who lived in the same neighborhoods/similar neighborhoods as me, and to me it's like they take on that thug life attitude and wear it on their sleeves as part of their identity, so cops view them as potential criminals. or you get those "i know my rights" type people who will sit there and argue with the cop... that only makes them more likely to see what kinda **** they can slap you with, in many cases.

but i also know a lot of black people who lived in the same neighborhoods/similar neighborhoods as me, and committed a lot of the same/similar crimes, yet their rap sheet is way way bigger than mine. it's like they draw a lot more attention from the police because yes, they're black, but also because of their hip hop/thuggish type of clothing, speech, mannerisms, and mentality. cops are human. and i think they typecast. so if they see me they think i'm harmless just because i'm white and don't adopt any sort of thuggish persona, where as some white people do and then they wonder why police give them a hard time.

it's cause they're openly embracing a sort of gang culture that runs square in the face of what the police are trying to accomplish. however, black people in these neighborhoods who might not be criminals or might be only minor offenders are still often likely to take on take on this persona as well, making it sometimes difficult for cops to distinguish between actual gangsters and just people with a certain thuggish image.

here's an example of what i mean:

does he do anything illegal? nah. but the cops are responding basically to patterns that indicate a possible criminal. one being race, but also age, style of dress, mannerisms, etc.

because of the long standing racial oppression in this country's past there is an easily formed sort of antagonism between the two groups.

which is why news stories like this get made

the take-home message here is the cops basically saying "hey, black people. we're not your enemy"

of course you can read in her eyes and tone of voice that this lady is geuinely grateful for what the sherriffs did for her, yet the take home message they have to settle with is 'not all cops are bad.'

there's still the assumption of antagonism though, just dialed down.

Trollheart 04-19-2015 07:24 PM

I understand what you're saying and agree to a point, but it's no excuse. I know quite well it's not the point you're making but really isn't this the old "she was wearing a mini skirt up to her arse so of course she got raped" argument? I guarantee you, if you have six white guys flipping off the cops and doing nothing much else than giving attitude they sure as hell won't get shot. Six black guys? Much more likely. Of course if you act law-abiding and respectful you probably are more likely to be left alone, but in the case of some of the recent cases it was clear racial profiling as far as I can see, and attitude had nothing to do with it.

There are times naturally when you invite that kind of behaviour. Nobody in their right mind walks up to a cop and calls him names, or pretends to draw a gun, and if they do then they make a rod for their own back. But the problem seems to be that now the FIRST reaction seems to be to shoot if black, NOT the LAST reaction, which is surely not right? If someone's giving you hassle, and you're a cop, take them in be they black or white or other, but you surely need a better reason than "he was black" to start shooting?

John Wilkes Booth 04-19-2015 07:55 PM

you seem to be under the impression that i'm saying there are no incidents where the cop is just racist. i'm not saying that. and i've said earlier in the thread that being black statistically makes you more likely to experience this sort of thing. so it seems like my tone isn't outraged enough for you or something... nothing that i've said is contradicted by the points you're trying to make, you're just doing it in a much more emotional way. but i've seen this **** escalate for years now so i'm really not trying to pour gas on that fire.

Actually there are some people who actually DO agree with my stance on this issue.

DwnWthVwls 04-19-2015 08:31 PM

I'm trying to figure out what that has to do with what I said.

Oh my god just because she's black you can't see any similar concepts discussed in your posts? I can't believe how racist you can get sometimes man.

You asked me why is it that I am always the minority on every issue and I said there are actually some people here who actually agree with me like Frownland for instance.
