My mom proposed to my dad without a ring, and he said no and proposed to her the next week with a ring. She cried for days and thought they were done

So yes it's fine. But the bitch better have a ring

i'm a 30 year old male, and i think if the lady i loved proposed to me, well that'd be pretty kick-*ss, in that super-meaningful kinda way. i'm also a huge fan of smashing gender rules in general though. things that happen exactly as prescribed are boring as all hell.
