Reasons you believe God/don't believe God?
 

Im not religious, but i belirve there is a god of sorts due to all the weird unexplainable things happening to me in my young life. No reason not to tbh.

I'm going to write here what I told the Mormons who came to my door when they asked me why I was an Atheist.

About five years ago, I had a major psychotic episode. In it, I became deeply religious. I even met a man who convinced me, without too much trouble, that he was God and I was his first disciple.

As I came out of that psychosis, with time and medication, I realised how much of what I believed wasn't, in any way, true, or even believable. As a process of coming out of psychosis, I had to rationally question every aspect of my life. It was clear that the man, Donald, his name was, wasn't God. So, how easy was it to convince a willing person that ANYONE was God, or had seen, or heard, God? I had not witnessed the Divine. Given how easy it had been to convince me, it wasn't too much of a stretch to believe that none of the writers of the Bible had witnessed the Divine either, but had simply been tricked, as I had. In fact, it was the most rational solution to the problem of religion.

As such, I can no longer justify belief in any form of religion.

I don't believe in a religious God in any way shape or form, but I won't 100% rule out the idea of a "creator" type being. Would be cool to think everything is kinda overruled by a Master Hand.

I respect people who have religious beliefs, but I've always disliked people using "inexplicable events" as justification for belief in God. If there is a God, and he really does "love everyone equally", then why would he randomly decide to throw down a few miracles for some people while letting everyone else die horribly?

I think The Bible was just a book of metaphors that were attempting to explain life and existence, back when folklore/myths were how things were explained. God is just a personification of the potential for life that exists in the functions and particles of the universe, which is something that ancient people could observe by seeing the circle of life in action (which probably explains why old religions have such a hard-on for dust and clay, which all things "come from" and inevitably "become". This is just an observation of the common origin and destination of all living things, albeit attributed to "God" rather than "Matter").

I don't think God is real.

I just think some guy wrote it back then just to make people around him learn. I just don't think that God could be real. There has to be scientific evidence.

I don't believe, because I don't know of any valid reasons or aguments for his existence.
Inexplainable things might equally be explained by the existence of god or the existence of hyperintelligent interdimensional telekinetic squidmonkeys who like to mess with people and honestly, the second thing is exactly as preposterous as the first.
Most likely it's just our psychological inclination to search for patterns and to want to think, that things happen for some external purpose and reason. People should really read up on cognitive bias, it explains so many things going on in the world.

And I agree with you. I never really understood that whole dichotomy. On the one hand, they claim that God loves everyone equally. And yet on the other, this same God routinely throws people who screw up into a place of eternal torture with no hope of redemption. If Christians are supposed to turn the other cheek and forgive each other, why doesn't their God do the same?
