No it is not specific its a stereotypical social construct that is based on the naked eye.

Just because someone might look "black" does not necessarily mean they are which is why you shouldn't go by appearances.

It's certainly better to go on than a label that just shows where your relatives once lived. Race is a physical (by way of genetics) characteristic, and so using a label that goes by physical characteristics makes more sense. I suppose "Negroid" (not to be confused with "negro") would be more scientifically useful, but I don't think many people like that term anymore.

Are you trying to say that Black is not an ethnicity? Ethnicity=/=race. Should I not call a tall dude tall because his mom might have been short, because him just being tall "doesn't tell the whole story"?

This is different.

For example,
Depending on how my hair is I have been mistaken for other races but I am African American. This is why you can not go strictly off of appearances to determine someone's race.

Wow that's a really realistic example you've entirely convinced me.

No I think that term is racist and I would advise you not to use it.

My point is just because someone may look "black" does not mean they necessarily are which is why it is not good to go solely off of appearances.

Can you give an example? Pics are ideal.

Zoe Saldana is dominican/spanish but going off of appearances she could pass as African American. So labeling her as "black" based on her skin color is not accurate.

Considering that black is also used to describe people native to Australia, I'd say it's not very specific.
