i don't get how you could define a system of rights and wrongs without using logic unless you create a system where things are arbitrarily considered either right or wrong. in which case i can just as easily place homosexuality in the 'arbitrarily wrong' category as i can bestiality.

Because if you don't question your premises you are at the mercy of your unthinking instincts. I think I've beaten the homosexuality example into the dust here, but what about transsexualism? How many people around do you think would consider that to be wrong just because of a gut feeling? Do you not want such a person to question their belief? Do you not want them to consider whether their belief might actually be serving any benefit to anybody, or whether it may actually be harming someone else for no reason? This is why applying logic to morality is important. There may be shades of grey, and other people's systems of logic may be valid to themselves, but we all live in the same world and must live with the very real consequences of every single human being's logical beliefs. It's irresponsible, and potentially harmful, not to think critically about your own moral code.

In the end aren't we just using logic to justify or support our morals, though? Some more soundly than others?

I'm gonna backtrack a little and say they're two sides to the same coin. And also that gut-feeling that you're describing isn't the end-all-be-all of morality, not by a long shot.

I mean it's wrong to murder, right?
Let's deduce.

You're voluntarily taking the life of another living person (being).
By doing so you're violating their lack of willingness to be killed by you.
It's rude.
It's morally wrong.

Or so most would think but still, the end of it is morals. S'like logic's the foundation and support beams and morals are the structure. Or something like that.
