A Parish in Louisiana has passed the pant-sagging law...

I can't believe this crap actually went through.
Louisiana town bans sagging pants - NY Daily News

Exerpt:
Quote:

...A Louisiana town wants to prohibit people from sagging, or wearing pants below the waist and exposing their underwear.

The ban would set a high price on low pants, slapping violators with a series of fines: $50 for the first offense, $100 for the second and $100 and 16 hours of public service for each subsequent offence.

The Terrebonne Parish Town Council voted 8 -1 to pass the ordinance, which the parish's president is expected to sign into law, reported WWL-TV.
First of all, never mind the obvious constitutional implications here, but the idea of government of any level regulating individuals' public image is absurd even without the 14th amendment. Even the comments from the bill's supporters IN THE NAACP, NO LESS, are ridiculous:

"We (are) here tonight to try and put a stop to this thing and let these boys and girls look decent"
What is that, an attempt at bringing minorities into a better social light by limiting their civil liberties? The irony here is mind-numbing.

This is clearly not about some issue of "public indecency", otherwise we'd be fining women whose thong straps are visible, hiding underwear shelves at stores and banning pictures of male models wearing nothing but underwear on the Fruit of the Loomb packages. Not to mention that sort of thing on adverts in public places. Oh, and if you bend over and some of your underwear are showing, watch out. Plumbers, you're doomed if engaging in public plumbing.
This is obviously a crack-down (pun not intended) on what certain people deem distasteful, and it's obviously not an opinion held by everyone to the extent that it needs to be legislated.

All I can say is "wow".

I feel it relevant to say that I was born and lived in that very parish in Louisiana for a lot of my life. Glad I'm gone from it. There's no telling what's next.

Finally some progress.

butthead aka 216 03-31-2014 04:49 PM

lets call it like it is, its so black ppl pull up their pants and look less like thugs or whatever

i kinda get where the politicans are comin from, i think i can tap into their mindset but like freebase said its pretty ridic to go around dictatin how ppl can look from a civil liberty perspective

Janszoon 03-31-2014 04:55 PM

That's pretty awesome that that parish has so few problems that they are able to devote time to such matters as trends in pants-wearing.

Haha. You joke around, but you never know, eventually they might come for your music taste and then you'll be sh*tting bricks. But in some people's cases, that might be progress too.

Freebase Dali 03-31-2014 05:08 PM

What's even crazier is the president of the NAACP was quoted saying, “There is nothing positive about people wearing saggy pants. This is not a black issue, this is not a white issue, this is a people issue... Young men who were in prison who wanted to have sex with other men would send a signal to another man with his pants below his waist.

...which, of course, is a myth. But irrelevant to that fact, Boykin is basically supporting the ordinance based on homophobia. Good job, NAACP. You don't seem hypocritical at all for an organization that endorsed same-sex-marriage.

Freebase Dali 03-31-2014 05:13 PM

I just realized that HHBH would be having a field day if he were here.

Yeah, obviously it is pretty bad. It's a ridiculous and humerous story but I don't like what it suggests. Fashion is how we express ourselves and there shouldn't be a limit on that. This is just the first step in a worldwide stifling of youth creativity.

If we take a step back and see the forest lately, this is only one small part. Look at the stuff Snowden exposed.

Pretty sure if someone were to place their ear to Orwell's grave, it would sound like shoes in a dryer.

I know nothing of this parish, but it would be interesting to know what other, possibly much more important, issues are being ignored while they concentrate on creating a Bush-like 50s decency in their town. Muggings? Nah, not important. Big hole in main street? Hell with that. Affordable housing? Look, we have bigger issues to look at: people are wearing low-slung pants!!! Come ON! Get with the program!!!!

Pathetic in every way.

Yep. That's what I was saying too.

Totally reminded me of this:

I can see this law getting squashed. Pretty pathetic even if I don't care for it.

Valid concern, but less concerning than the precedent being set, to be honest.

"Worry about important issues" is one thing.
"Go ahead and violate protected expression because it doesn't affect me directly or I personally find something offensive" is quite another. What's next, tattoos? Ear gauges?

On a larger scale, I'd think people would be more concerned about the latter.

Oh, I agree. I just like mocking people who pass stupid laws.

I was doing some searching around and apparently another parish in Louisiana was/is (unsure of the status on it) trying to do the same thing, but WAY more vague. Basically, it would mean that everyone in the parish couldn't wear shorts or skirts. lol...

I remember when I was in college there was a small city near me that tried to pass a ban on swearing in public. Same kind of bullshit. I don't know why so many people think that the fact that they find something aesthetically objectionable means that it should illegal.

You don't even want to see my Facebook. A friend posted an article about it and opened it up for discussion.
There were comments like, "i agree nobody wanna see dat unless u gay or somethin wanna see some dudez underwear smh"

I feel bad just living here.

Any time you see those people posting photos of themselves wearing clothes you think are ugly, you should post a comment letting them know that you're going to petition the parish to get those clothes banned.

And I can also add that I am offended by guys with bangs who are overweight and who probably smell like sausage. That would likely catch a good 80 percent.

I live right next to a city that did pass such a ban. It's not because they're particularly religious, it's just a tourist city that apparently wants to project a family environment. They actually have these signs up. **** Virginia Beach. Some bicycle cop pulled me over for running a stop sign over there too.

Why don't they just give people belts?

Or give them the belt?

Pull your damn pants up, kids.

They generally do wear belts. It's how they keep them around their thighs rather than their ankles.

In the same way that you notice a billboard when you've been sitting in traffic for 20 minutes.

But in terms of the topic, it seems like it's turning into a nanny state. Next you will be told what clothes you're allowed to wear and how your hair should look (North Korea anyone?).
