I don't know the politics of it actually but I know the Irish ex-ambassador or something in Peru was helping out. Generally, when someone from Northern Ireland is involved in the news it's a field day for media: they can be Irish or British, so both the Irish news and the UK news are claiming her to be of their nationality.

But as far as we're concerned, anyone from our island is considered Irish. Why do they call themselves Northern Irish and not Slightly-West-of-British?

It's like the old joke isn't it? When the Northern Irish boxer was punching hell out of his opponent the commentator roared in approval "Oh the British lad is doing well here!" But when he began to take punches and lose ground it was "Oh now the Irish lad is in trouble!"
