His knowledge of history is terrible, which explains his inability to note larger trends.

The South flipped because, as had been observed in the early 20th century, people only approve of social benefits when they're benefiting those with the same worldview as their own. Hence why Theodore Roosevelt (amongst others) were so vigorous in busting political machines. Now, obviously, Southern Whites followed in this tradition, as do todays Liberals:

I suppose the response is saying that white bigots flipped because social benefits of civil rights was not consistent with their world view... so they became Republicans. That's why the South now votes Republican.

Well, Cruz lost and govt is funded through Nov 15 with Obamacare being funded. However, because the bill in the Senate and House differ, it will get kicked back to the House for another go-around to be voted on Tuesday which could and likely will result in a partial shutdown of the govt since the teabags refuse to compromise and insist everything must be their way or no way. The culprits are Cruz, Mike Lee, Marco Rubio and Rand Paul--the guys whom the GOP is contemplating as their front-runners for president in '16. You can now see what chance they have of winning.

I read this whole thread hoping to find some insightful opinions but all I got was this lousy confirmation that discussing politics on a web forum is still a fool's errand in 2013.
