If you don't like it, you have the power to not listen to it. You won't ever be able to control what others say, but to some extent you can control what you hear, by not associating with people who are verbally abusive, not listening to comedy where you're likely to hear insensitive humor, etc.
What do you think should be done about it? There will always be insensitive pricks out there who think that it's socially acceptable to say they're going to rape you, or to call you the N-word. A lot of teens say it now, or at least they did when I was going to school. It was supposed to be funny to say that you're going to rape someone's face. It isn't funny, it's actually very lame, but it also isn't really that offensive IMO. If you think it's offensive, speak up. If the person who said it keeps it up, that's harassment. |
