Time has had Hitler on its cover. I think it gets away with it, because it's meant to be an informative, current events magazine, whereas Rolling Stone is known pop-culture and rockstars. Different contexts for similar photos.

This was not: Comparing and contrasting mass murderers on magazine covers is not off topic. Your backseat moderating/self-preservation is.

Anyway, as to the bomber dude on the cover of RS, I can see where people are coming from in terms of how it might be interpreted as glorification to the impressionable. At the same time, however, RS has traditionally always had a political involvement in their mag. But part of me wonders what's so political about this particular case that brought them to the decision to put him on the cover. I wondered that until I actually read what they wrote on it. "How a popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam, and became a monster". As though this "angel" wasn't accountable for his actions and we can shift the blame onto something else since it's his family that f*cked him up. Score one for the impressionable kids. Again, I didn't read the article so take what I say at face value. It's just my first impression.

free dali that bolded part you commented on is a good point. i think a huge problem in society is accountability. i try to teach kids all the time to be accountable but everyone tries to blame others. its a big step from being taught or even told to do something and then actualyl doing it.
i agree that i am not sure really what political discussion the guy on the cover opens up |

Exactly. Time has also had Stalin, Nixon and Ayatollah Khomeini on their cover as Person of the Year as well. It's not the Awesome Guy of the the Year, it's a reflection of people they feel were very significant during that time, in one way or another. And as you say, it's a news magazine, of course it's going to have political figures on its cover. Rolling Stone is a music magazine. I think they were just trying to court controversy with this to sell more issues.
