debtors prisons

seem to be making a comeback in the us of a. As having accumulated a certain amount of debt this makes me nervous:(

More than a third of all states now allow borrowers who don’t pay their bills to be jailed, even when debtor’s prisons have been explicitly banned by state constitutions. A report by the American Civil Liberties Union found that people were imprisoned even when the cost of doing so exceeded the amount of debt they owed.

Debt collection is a lucrative business — the industry is set to grow 26 percent in the next three years.

The Federal Trade Commission received more than 140,000 complaints related to debt collection in 2010. That's nearly 25,000 more than the previous year.

If your debt is school loan related, I don't think you have to worry about it.

I didn't know the USA was still in the Middle Ages.

that's a good portion of it, not so worried about the federal loans, more so the private ones-i expect them to come at me with the full extent.

@burningdown

I'm hoping to get out in the forseeable future (though that vision is getting hazy)

I remember being on wellfare in DK and covering a two bedroom apartment with cable, a deck, over looking a lovely park. Here even with all my loans i got roughly 100$ back on my tax return. No doubt need to get out its a sinking ship

It's a funny world when people can get thrown into prison for owing a couple of thousand dollars to men who cheated the world out of millions and got away scot-free.

Most of the stories that I have seen/heard have been for smaller amounts like just a high hundreds/few thousands.

I haven't heard of any cases reported of people getting thrown in jail over private school loans.

Debtors’ prisons were around far more recently than the Middle Ages. They were around in Britain during the 19th century.

Are you defaulting on the regular?
That means: Have you not paid your bills for a really long time?

You seriously think minimum security prison is a nice place to be? I'm asking because I don't know - and I'm curious. I have this instinctual drive for freedom that keeps me finding ways to pay my bills.

I have no idea. I've never been in a minimum security prison but from all the stories I hear from movies to real life experiences from other people it doesn't seem that bad.

ThePhanastasio 07-23-2013 11:22 PM

If they come for me, I'm just going to fall to my knees and beg them to garnish my wages. Mine aren't significant; it's some bull**** that my previous college keeps telling me I didn't pay, and that I keep paying over and over again. I swear to God, for that $75 parking ticket in 2005, they've gotten at least $325 from me.

You'd think after the 2nd or third time you would either 1. Demand a receipt for payment in person, or 2. send a cashier's check via Certified Mail (Return Receipt Requested).

Just saying.
