I don't care what the lady said, it's wrong to knock the **** out of a woman like that. The other guys on the bus should beat his ass.
Do you not see how saying that sort of negates your point about hitting people (specifically women in your words)? Violence is never the answer.

I think they should've at least stepped in but to be honest if I was in that carriage then I would have kept my mouth shut. People in London are ****ing mental.

I only spent a week and a half there but as far as I could tell people in London are just like people everywhere else: a mixed bag.

I agree, depends where you go I guess. The centre will be like that with loads of tourists, East and South are bad places (Newham, Lewisham, Brixton) but then West London is full of places like Richmond, Fulham, Chelsea, Kingston and Mayfair, really well off sort of places.

Well I only hear the horror stories really, of people being stabbed etc. People say those things about Glasgow and most other Scottish towns and cities too but the difference is I know what areas up here are scummy and dodgy and so avoid them. I just tread carefully and try not to step on anyone's toes when I'm in an unfamiliar area. You just never know who you will cross.

Not really. I know violence isn't the answer, but when you punch a woman in the face as hard as you can, I'd say you deserve a punch or two right back. If you knew me you'd know I'm a very peaceful person, but I believe in standing up for yourself and others. You're telling me if you saw a man beating a woman you wouldn't do anything about it? And if that man tried to harm you, you wouldn't retaliate?

Mayfair is not West London despite the fact its post code starts with W. West London in general tends to be the most upmarket, then probably followed by North and then South. East is regarded as the more deprived part. But there are still plenty of upmarket areas in both South and East London.

OK Mayfair isn't 'West' admittedly as I got tricked by the post code

Generally speaking, within Britain Londoners are seen as a bit of an anomaly. There's a peculiar insularity about the area that leads to a few common (Not universal, but certainly common) traits and assumptions.

Most particularly, because London is so large, but so dense towards the center, Londoners in my experience can lack certain perspectives. The most obvious example is that while someone from Manchester or Sheffield would never commonly ring a company up and blindly assume they're speaking to someone local, who knows the area. Londoners will do that a lot. I'll get a phone call from a London area at work and people will ask me to give them directions to very specific places in London, referencing landmarks and street names immediately, before I even get a chance to tell them I've no idea where they're talking from, or indeed about. People from local towns and such will also define their location by a distance from London, or by their proximity to a side of London.

I've also had friends who've lived in London for extended periods tell me that in London the attitude that they've ended up having to take towards things like walking along a busy street, is to practically consider other people dangerous. Not make eye contact, to withdraw into your personal bubble as much as possible to avoid confrontation or interaction with other people. Now obviously I don't think any big city is really going to make you feel welcome and befriended on the street, but London was described to me as peculiarly so.

I'm sure there are other aspects of London that are bizarre too. Its simply so much bigger than anywhere else in the UK that it kind of makes its own set of social rules that don't apply anywhere else.
