I thought maybe he was reffering to the term indian but I was hoping surely not. But theres always extremists who probaly are really offened by the term just to have something to gripe about. No lie, I saw on a sports show last summer called "around the horn" where a segment of the show discussed changing the name of an NFL team. The reason was because even though this team had had the same name for god knows how many years, the name had become offensive to some of those in the indian culture. The team was non other our nations capitals Washington "Redskins."

Yeah, redskins is definitely a racial epithet. You might as well have a team called the Washington Darkies.

To play devils advocate you do have a team called the vikings-symbolized with horns, as well as "the fighting irish" both pretty nasty stereotypes in their own right.

not saying one excuses the other but i can kinda understand the comic value in it

I think the difference is that neither the Irish people nor Vikings were driven off their land and pushed to the edge of extinction by the culture that created those teams.

i was poking around the history of the term "redskin"

it's funny the first coach of the "boston redskins" was actually of native american descent himself, and the name of the team may have actually be to "honor" his heritage. Unfortunately wiki does not source this bit as far as i can tell

The Irish weren't driven off the land, but they lost the right to own land.
