Human Trafficking
 

Have you seen this movie and documentary? It's absolutely disgusting that a woman would do this to young ladies! A man I'd understand, we live in a world where women are largely disrespected by men, particularly in developing nations but not limited to our own. I have been following the American elections and not to single out republicans again but they are a great example of how women have a long way to go to be accepted by men.

The saddest part of trafficking to me is even if the women escape the pimps they are scarred for life.

I haven't seen either of those documentaries, I will now, though.

I think my passion for human trafficking comes from my background. My mom has fairly pounded information on the Civil War, slavery, and human rights into me... I mean, when I was little. Most parents don't do that, and I am forever grateful that she never shied away from hard truths and political stuff that is generally avoided by parents. When I found out that slavery continues to exist, I had the foundation I needed to understand how awful it really is.

I recommend the documentary Nefarious: Merchant of Souls. It's quite good, gets a lot of "behind the scenes" looks at the sex industry.

In 10th grade I have a very progressive Social Studies teacher who decided to say fuck the curriculum and teach about modern societal plagues. One subject we studied at length was sex slavery and in a very confrontational way with discussions of news articles and hard hitting documentaries like the ones posted in the original post. I could tell not everyone in the class took it that seriously, but there was something particularly heinous about this that really resonated with my sense of justice and it's a topic I have been following ever since.

Growing up and living in Vancouver B.C., I would often find myself looking at shipping containers stacked up by the docks and wonder how many people were inside them. Vancouver is a growing nexus point for all things illegal in North America and usually the starting point for most Vice related crimes that trickle down the Pacific Northwest. For those unaware, I am actually a Criminal Justice major with aspirations of joining a police force and getting a detective assignment. One assignment that I would like to try would be as a Vice cop, largely because sex slavery is one of those crimes that just revolts me to the point of blind rage.

The sad thing is it's the same tune that was sung in the 19th century, "Come to America, your life will be so much better", and while many immigrants have thrived in this great country, just as many have had horrible experiences. It's the oldest marketing hook in the business, prey on either the naivety or desperation of people, and these groups that bring these girls in do just that. Focusing on poor Eastern European or South East Asian countries where prospects are low and people are really willing to in effect sign their life away at the chance of something better. From what I've read, it's not unheard of for these organizations to take away these women's passports and practically hold them to ransom, and there's no real recourse. If a girl manages to get away and go the police, she's in the country illegally and will be deported, and the organization will cut their losses and move out before an investigation can be planned out. It's also not uncommon to just move them from town-to-town, that way the girls never get too familiar with the John's and any investigations in progress get stalled as agencies have to share information and guess their next move.

The worst part of this is that this type of behavior isn't limited to just prostitution. Last year in Vancouver, a woman was charged with slavery against her house keeper, whom she took her passport and paperwork and pretty much held it to ransom. That story led to another similar sounding story with two nannies and another one involving hotel staff, but I am unable to find that news article at this time. All of these are just from Vancouver Canada, a city that constantly prides itself on being voted one of the best cities to live in, but we really have a seedy underbelly that we do our best to hide.

Wow, excellent post. Would you ever want to be an FBI agent? I really hope your dream comes true as the world needs people like you to take action. These people don't seem to accept sex trafficking is a problem, they consider it just business which is horrifying. They do definitely take away their passports and the girls are forced to pay off so-called debts which never stop rising due to them being fined for silly things. Not to mention they are passed along like a used rag to new and more violent pimps. I just want to reach out to these women and make them understand what traps they can fall into.

The governments are to blame as well, the police force is often corrupt and they don't educate women about the risks. I'm beginning to wonder whether it's turning into a big problem over here as a lot of South East Asian women are illegal prostitutes with false passports and all our government do is deport them when they are discovered.

The individual (lets call him Fred) was the ex-lover of a man in the terminal stages of AID’s. Tony asked us if we could find Fred before he departed the planet. Not easy as he was homeless. After a few days we found him and took him to meet Tony who died a few days later but not before asking me to give his ex lover a place to live. Stupidly I respected the dying man’s wishes. Soon after moving in with me Fred attempted on three occasions to rape me. Only my martial arts background stoped him in his tracks. I gave him a month to move out of my house. The same morning I went out to buy milk. When I returned there was no sign of Fred until I looked out the back window and saw he’d hung himself in my garage. The police attempted to prove I’d somehow killed him which added another layer of trauma.
I soon phoned Fred’s sister to tell her the bad news only to be greeted with “How much money did he have”? Some families are cursed.
There’s more to all this but I don’t enjoy talking about it to say the least.

OMG Ayn, I'm so so sorry. I didn't realise this was so traumatic for you. Apologies for making you bring this up. I really hope you're ok and know that you are so so important.

Yeah me too. Thanks for sharing this, you've had an interesting life for sure, but that must have been very traumatic

If I can drag us back to the original topic for a moment.
Few realise women in China today are trafficked and too frequently abused in heterosexual relationship/marriages. I’ve witnessed men beating women in public with locals hardly even reacting. In private the cruelty is often worse.
I’m reminded of witnessing dogs being skinned alive in Chinese markets in front of tourists for the amusement our shocked reactions gave the locals.
