The british folks tend to live in the East Coast side which is where most British people went to. The Midwest region is pretty much owned by Germans, Sweedishs, Polishs, Czech people, and others.

No, it refers to the north in general, and the northeast in particular. New England is part of that area, but not the only part. That's why a non-New England state is the one with a team called the Yankees.

Also, I believe it used to refer to the entire country until the south decided they didn't want to be a part of the country. So basically the British have just continued using the original definition.

Nonsense, the team name is better explained by New Yorkers being a bunch of stupid ***s.
