I believe it was in New York actually, not just near it.

who cares about his religion. His tax policy is far more unrealistic.

Judging candidates based on their religious beliefs is one of the many problems the American political system is facing. Yeah, Romney's a mormon and yeah, it's fairly out there, but the only part of that which should be relevant is how it seeps into his actual policies. Also Joseph Smith did indeed found Mormonism in New York.

Mormonism is crazy. Jesus visited America, the Native Americans are cursed Isrealites, the garden of Eden was in Missouri... But let's be honest, Mormon theology is only slightly less crazy than a lot of religions, it just has a more recent history. Without a religion, you probably won't be elected in this country. It's a sad state of affairs, but people want their leader's to have belief in a deity. Honestly, Obama's attitude toward his personal beliefs is far more indicative of a rational person than Romney's. Fact of the matter is, traditional Christian theology is seen as less crazy, or not crazy at all, compared to mormon theology, yet Romney believes it and has apparently never officially questioned his own religion.

Man, there's no way to say that without sounding like an asshole

That said, I wouldn't let his Mormonism impede my vote if I thought he was the stronger candidate. It's just one aspect of his personality.

Can this not degrade into another "Mormonism is teh fail, brah" thread. Religion is a crazy thing. You get saddled with it when you're young, and if you don't claim something you do get to be President.

Forget about it, there is substantiated policy here that should be talked about a lot more than someone staring into a hat.

Fair enough, I agree.

While Mormonism does have WAY too many crazy points (like the "magic underwear" that can stop bullets), the notion that Jesus visited America after his resurrection is actually one that makes the most sense to me. It is believed that between ages 18 and 30 that Jesus visited India to study and spread his message. It isn't unreasonable to think that he would also visit another area of the world in order to spread his message as well. In Greek and Roman mythology, there were numerous accounts of the "Gods" disappearing for prolonging periods of time, and during their absence, accounts of very similar "Gods" would pop up in other parts of the world. I know that this is neither the time nor place to discuss this, but I just wanted to quickly touch on that point.

Yeah, I realize that recent scientific advances have called into question the idea that ancient people wouldn't be able to cross the Atlantic Ocean and go to the Americas, but I think it's pretty unreasonable to assume that Jesus might have gone all the way to the edge of the known world, and then hopped onto a ship and gone all the way to America and presumably have a series of adventures (I don't know much about Mormonism) and then go all the way back and not mention it.
