As for updates on the Marriage Admendments in Minnesota, DC, Maryland, and Maine.

They are all failed to pass. Maryland and Maine remain states with gay marriage. Minnesota does not fully ban chances of GAY Marriage. DC will likely remain another state with gay marriage.

I have a pretty strong suspicion that something along those lines will happen in our lifetime. The more time goes by the more I think were going to start seeing the latter group you reference start drifting off into a fringe extremist party (or parties) while the republican party turns into a party that's more about simply fiscal conservatism.

@batlord, it's funny because Tore seems to want Right-Wing politics to be anything but reactionary, :P

I doubt it. Fissures in the Republican party are nothing compared to those in the Democrats. If we pretended people voted for reasons other than identity politics, I'd place money on a party emerging which unites fiscal populism with reactionary Christian morality across racial lines, consider:

The single most reliable ethnic constituency of Democrats are blacks. Despite this, when gay rights - a Democratic pet project if there very was one - went to the ballot, they were more conservative than Whites.

Latinos & Blacks tend to vote Democrat for reasons economic & because of identity politics. I don't think this is sustainable because (1) their religious/cultural views conflict strongly with those of liberal whites/jew/asians, & (2) because the economic life of these groups continue to move apart.

You do realize you have actually just said nothing that backs up your doubts about what I said about the republican party, right?

whoops. Let me expand on:

If we pretended people voted for reasons other than identity politics,

In other words, most people vote Republican because said party is evolving into an white identity party. The party is already mostly white, so major fissures won't occur.

Good idea. It would give people like John McCain who I respect despite disliking their economic outlook an actual chance to be taken seriously outside of the US.

It's happened before with the Democrats as the parties were beginning the shift to different sides post WWII. The ignorant reactionary racists split off and formed the Dixiecrats who naturally embarrassed themselves by being a bunch of idiots. Seeing as those guys are now firm Republicans maybe there's another opportunity for the party to clear itself of the scum leeching off of it.
