Actually, I think the case you were thinking of is probably the murder of Shafilea Ahmed, which happened in England.

This was big news here and it really finally highlighted some of the horrors that go on in these communities regarding things like arranged marriages. They only really go on in tight asian communites here, where having a daughter is often seen as being a financial burden on the parents if she fails to marry.
