As far as I know, homosexuality is a complex issue which involves many factors. A couple of years ago or so, I read about a study that found out that homosexuality in men was linked to a genetic component which increases fertility in women. So this genetic component makes women more likely to become pregnant (which is why it's evolved), but also factors in homosexuality.
There are also many studies pointing towards the importance of the fetal environment. It's now "famously" known that the more older brothers you have, the higher chance you have of being gay. I can't remember the specifics behind this, but it has something to do with male fetuses triggering an immune reaction in their mothers which becomes stronger with each successive child. This bit about homosexuality on 60 minutes is getting a little old, and I'm sure I posted it in another thread, but it is really interesting. You guys should watch it if you haven't

I think, somewhere along the line, the whole nature v nurture argument would have to be thrown into the mix. If you consider the tabula rasa argument then it's hard to argue that people are born gay because they would have no disposition to favour either sex.
Having said that, I certainly don't remember any social stimuli that leaned me more one way than the other. One day there was nothing, the next 'wow, she's kinda nice....'. |

Those videos I posted up there actually do a pretty good job of summarizing advances made in uncovering the mystery that is homosexuality anno 2006.
I realize most probably won't be arsed with watching it, but they point out that homosexuality is not simply a behaviour, but also a physiological characteristic. They say nurture as the cause has been disproven, but that genetic components and the environment in the mothers womb during pregnancy are important factors. Needless to say, these factors play their role before the child is born. It's also demonstrated how one can make rats sexually behave like the opposite sex; if females are administered testosterone at birth or males if they are castrated at birth, depriving them of testosterone. Rats are not humans, but it is indicative of how hormones may affect development.

The APA states:

This is important, as the previously held position of the APA was that sexuality was genetic.
