All I want to add to this right now is that the astrophysicist Fred Hoyle proposed this idea of the fixed state theory. He wasn't shouted down, but in the end he agreed that his theory was incompatible with the evidence, and dropped it.
He wasn't derided for doing so, he was just trying to come up with other theories. |
^^it was at least better than the Solid State Theory

However, it can get on my nerves a little bit when some people (No names...cough, cough *ID* cough) keep trying to challenge certain principles, not for scientific reasons but religious ones. |

But if there's one thing I would recommend to religious people it would be: Be a little more open-minded and reasonable. You don't have to completely reject science in order to remain religious. |
Did you know I myself am a Christian?
It irritates me when other religious people use science as a vehicle to promote that religion, though. That's not the point of science. Science is for finding out about the world, not for backing up your own interpretation of scripture, which may be wrong anyway. |

I think the religion I like the most is Buddhism. Other than that, I've taken some interest in Gnostic Christianity. |
