I think what you're saying here has more to with differences between American vernacular and Irish vernacular than anything else. Over here the word "holiday" isn't used as a synonym for "vacation" the way it sounds like it is over there.

Sure, if they're trying to group Thanksgiving in with the holiday season that runs from then through New Year's.
