Fat people probably are a burden on the state depending on what the state refers to (more specifically where you live). On the other hand so are smokers, gamblers, people who don't use contraception, people who drive SUVs, people who evade taxes, people who steal, people who use poison on their lawns... etc etc etc.
At least fat people are always there to make you laugh... |

Wow. As a fatty who takes care of herself and doesn't get any state benefits, I have to say I'm appalled by the attitude of most of the people posting in this thread.
I had a long drawn out post to make, but Urban and Pedestrian pretty much summed everything up nicely. How disappointing. :/

It's really a pretty murky issue all round. I don't just mean obesity but addictive/ self-destructive behaviour in general, be it crack, smack, booze, burgers, bongs or whatever you choose to self-destruct. I am kind of uncomfortable with the term addiction because in medicalising an issue it really absolves the destructee of any personal responsibility. Ultimately people choose their poison and you do get to a point where the body expects more of whatever you have been giving it but I also believe that you can't expect someone else to stop you from self-destructing or to support you in doing it.

I did want to raise a healthy debate and I knew it could get tense. As a person who has suffered from depression and has both nearly stopped eating and overeaten in different times I can see what a complex situation it can be for bigger people. However there is a point where you have to see that your over eating, never getting out is going to kill you and be a burden to others and your family if you don't make a change.
