Ok, I think I understand it now. In that video we assume that all people who voted for turtle all agreed with owl as being second. But in the real world, maybe 1% votes owl, 2% leopard and 2% tiger, which would mean the votes (minus turtle now) would stand as:
Gorilla 25% Owl 26% Leopard 32% Tiger 17% Yeah?

I wish we had something like that here! Our system sucks. Anyways, the alternative vote is also known as instant-runoff voting.

So if you want to vote for someone, you rank them first, and then you rank your preferences after that? Do they assign a numerical value to them, and then add them all up at the end?
First preference = 1 vote. Second preference = 2 votes, etc. Then the least votes wins? It's like golf. /Tragic misunderstanding |
